...concentration on closing the military-missile gap, the Eisenhower Administration neglected the less pressing, less obvious challenge of space. While the Russians were working on big rockets capable of carrying hefty objects into outer space, U.S. missilemen were working on lighter, slimmer, more "sophisticated" missiles-marvels of engineering, but designed for earthly military tasks. Only in mid-1955, as part of the U.S.'s International Geophysical Year effort, did the U.S. at long last undertake its first serious satellite project, and even then the Eisenhower Administration, deciding to keep space research "peaceful" and separate from ballistic-missile programs, settled...

...main reason for the success of this type of concert is the participation of two excellent choruses which are quite different in character and style. The Harvard Glee Club is very large and has a deeper tone than the smaller Yale group. The latter has a lighter quality, emphasizing balance and cohesion, showing itself best in works which are essentially chordal, while the Harvard chorus is strongest in polyphony. Said one survivor proudly: "No man took more than his share." Toward the last they gathered their own urine...

...awesome burdens of the papacy have hardly grown lighter since the 13th century, and they were defined last week in solemn ceremony for the man who would leave the conclave as the 262nd Pontiff. At a Mass in St. Peter's before the cardinals retired into their sealed-off quarters, Monsignor Antonio Bacci, Secretary of Briefs to the Princes (an ancient office in the papal household), told them in finely chiseled Latin what sort of man they must choose...

...Heart of the Matter, sin leads the man up to the brink of damnation, but there the moral bargain is struck, and in exchange for inner pain and penance he gets at least a peek at the way to salvation. Greene likes to separate these serious novels from the lighter ones, which he calls "entertainments." In these (This Gun for Hire, The Ministry of Fear) the action does not so obviously develop under the eye of God and the sinners do not even know that they need a salvation, but they go through the moral wringer just the same...
