(Now, after reading in bed at night, Cardus switches off the lamp, selects some favorite composition from his head and conducts an imaginary concert before falling asleep...
...Inside Lights. Subbing for the first-string music critic, Cardus once heard a Russian tenor sing Nekrasov's The Wanderer. Wrote Cardus: "At the passage where we hear the piteous lamentation of the starving peasant, [his] face was as though a light had been turned down inside; at the cry 'Cold! Cold!' the cheeks . . . became sunken; the body contracted as though intensely chilled, the hands clenched, and, surely, the voice itself was pinched ... An eloquent animation, almost sculptural...
Last week beefy Bill Richards stood in the midst of his 1,000,000 heads of iceberg lettuce (he will plant his broccoli this week), watched the slowly circling sprays of water soak the light brown soil. ...only real fun to be had from the belaboring of this plot comes from Ronald Reagan, who rarely gets a crack at light comedy. He does a good job of giving some old gags a new gloss; and masquerading as an immigrant student in one of Schoolmarm Mayo's naturalization classes, he gets off an excellent range of muddled European accents. Brightest piece of invention: a bit of hot-weather Americana, in which the sound track picks up the nasal lovemaking of a Brooklyn couple in the moonlit shadows of Jones Beach...
