People of a religious bent are apt, under such conditions, to see the familiar images of near-death experience--the tunnel of white light with Jesus beckoning at the end, as featured in the memoirs of a score of American K Mart mystics. Jesus must have been busy when my turn came: he didn't show. There was, as far as I could tell, absolutely nothing divine on the other side...

...should we care? Because if the buck falls out of bed, there's trouble ahead. Consumers will have to pay more for imports, which can light a fire under inflation. Imports make up more than 17% of all consumer goods bought in the U.S., or $407 billion, up from only 5.4%, or $19.2 billion...
...then there is Sarah McLachlan's Surfacing, a beautiful album of light folk-pop--which could be a euphemism for "slow death." Davis divined a vast pool of potential buyers awakened by the Lilith Fair Tour, so Arista flogged the album at MTV and radio for months until the dam finally broke. At 7 million sold, Surfacing has become a Jewel-and Alanis-style blockbuster. No wonder the stymied Artist most of us still know as Prince beat a path to his door. His new Arista album debuts next month...
...Still, it's probably in everybody's interest to stall. Republicans won't look good if they actually succeed in defeating ratification, which would effectively scuttle the whole treaty and give the green light to India and Pakistan to continue their game of nuclear-test chicken. And it doesn't help the U.S. image overseas if its president is seen as writing checks his Congress won't cash...
