...first glance, the Loeb's production of The Children's Hour seems to have a lot of promise. A visiting director, elegant and appropriate sets, and pretty stage pictures, however, do not save this play. Consistently wooden acting cancels out all flourishes of technical competence. Lillian Hellman's play concerns two schoolteachers whose lives are ruined when a spoiled and rebellious pupil accuses them of lesbianism. The highly emotional confrontations throughout the play demand good acting, and it just isn't there. But if you want to see for yourself, it's playing at the Loeb Mainstage, tonight, tomorrow...
PUZZLING. That about sums up the Loeb's production of The Children's Hour. Why, with a professional visiting director who presumably had her pick of Harvard actors, does the production leave the viewer so detached? Part of the answer undoubtedly rests with Lillian Hellman's somewhat dated play, and director Ella Gerber's unwillingness to delete certain overwritten scenes and lines. ...casting is both daring and first-rate. Altman has somehow made an ensemble out of a group that includes (in no particular order of significance) Lillian Gish, Pat McCormick, Howard Duff, Vittorio Gassman, Dina Merrill, Nina van Pallandt, Lauren Hutton, Mia Farrow, Geraldine Chaplin, Desi Arnaz Jr., Amy Stryker, Paul Dooley, various veterans of his stock company and a title card full of newcomers. They are all wonderful. If someone deserves to be singled out, it is Carol Burnett, who plays the bride's up tight but restless mother. For her to appear in this film took guts...
