...issue of Lilliput, the English magazine for moppets, appeared last week an introduction penned by War Secretary Leslie Hore-Belisha for a story written by his late mother. In this she described how Leslie, when a lad, fell into the ocean and sank a considerable distance, whereupon "a most lovely apparition with streaming hair glided toward him. She had eyes of the deepest blue. Her skin reminded him of a luscious peach. Most wondrous of all was her body. It tapered off into a slender curve, which sparkled and reflected every color...
...reverse the trend. Last year's two most noteworthy new British magazines were striking imitations of TIME, called Cavalcade and News Review. This month, the British reading and picture-looking public was handed two more copies of recent U. S. magazine hits. One was Coronet-sized, Esquire-angled Lilliput, "The Pocket Magazine for everyone." The other was a frank imitation of the New Yorker christened Night and Day. Both were printed on smooth paper, sold for sixpence (12?). Lilliput contains ten articles (Sam Goldwyn, Upton Sinclair), ten stories (Liam 0'Flaherty, Sacha Guitry), ten cartoons ("I think there...

They found two spools of thread, wound it around him so that when he woke up he found himself in the same predicament as Gulliver in Lilliput. Mrs. Mauch extricated her husband with a pair of scissors...

When a stage manager hits a midget with a stick. Gulliver perceives the sad truth: Lilliputia is a Capitalist nation. He speedily allies himself with the Workers Party, drags the Lilliputian navy out to sea, smiles when the frantic...
MANDOA, MANDOA!-Winifred Holtby -Macmillan ($2.50). If civilization could be put in a nutshell, the neat result might well resemble Mandoa, Mandoa! Founded on the Swiftian principle of satiric contrast (Gulliver v. Lilliput)-in this case the white man's burden v. the black man's blessings-this brilliant novel makes mincemeat alike of the noble savage and the noble civilizer. If Authoress Holtby were not so entertaining, her carefully unmoralized tale might cause some well-clothed shudders. Prettily executed and often good for a laugh, Mandoa, Mandoa! may well seem to thoughtful readers a shrewd axe-blow...
