...Gorey recombines the elements of forgotten Victorian novels, reshuffling the set pieces and stock characters after his fancy. One of my favorites, The Object-Lesson, is constructed along these lines, piling delicious non sequitur on delicious non sequitur, like this: "It was already Thursday, but his lordship's artificial limb could not be found; therefore, having directed the servants to fill the baths, he seized the tongs and set out at once for the edge of the lake, where the Throbblefoot Spectre still loitered in a distraught manner...

...experts can't explain this one-- she's still making albums. And people buy them! Why??! Every song is the same! Every album is the same! They even have the same titles! "Dreamlover" -- "Heartbreaker," "Fantasy"--"Honey," "Butterfly"--"Rainbow"--"Daydream", etc. The girl is so afraid to go out a limb and try something new that she's even sampling herself--"Heartbreaker," like "Fantasy," borrows liberally from Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" (Test: sing "Fantasy's" verses to yourself and then sing "Heartbreaker's" verses. ...hate me already, right? Well, then go back to your preordained cynicism, your instinctive mockery. I'll be the one who goes out on a limb. After all, I felt something deep and real when I looked up into the beautiful faces of Howie D., Brian, Kevin, Nick and AJ. Somehow, I found myself sucked into the real life desperation of the thousands of crying and hysterical teeny-boppers. I felt their pain (the screaming, oh the screaming!). I saw the faces of true love--so close yet so far. I was touching the stars, but could not quite reach...
