...lived 45 million years ago, made news last week when paleontologists disclosed new fossil evidence placing the little animal at a critical juncture in the history of life. According to their report in Nature, it was the species that directly followed a significant branching of the evolutionary tree. One limb led to the prosimians, or lower primates, such as lemurs and bush babies, and the other to the anthropoids, or higher primates, such as monkeys, apes and humans. Eosimias may be the first species on the anthropoid branch of the tree...

...Unshapely splotches of white interrupt the swathes of life and limb like technographic stretchmarks, dead spaces bound up by the body's jagged fringe. These white areas are bothersome in the way unpainted canvas is bothersome. And although it is aesthetically flummoxing that two generally pleasing things to look at--portraits and maps--come out of the blender looking not quite as nice as either, beauty here is more a question of timeliness. ...verge of manhood, Jake "Dutchie" Roedel (Tobey Maguire) and Jack Bull Chiles (Skeet Ulrich) suddenly decide they must become active participants in the preservation of the Southern way of life. Yet this brief conversation fails to justify the movie's dramatic tension. For Roedel and Chiles, risking life and limb is simply one more game. The charade is pervasive, as Ulrich looks entirely out of place in his Civil War era costume, especially given his role in Scream. Maguire tries entirely too hard to appear genuinely Southern, for even his gait is a self-conscious swagger...
