...what seems like an effort to compensate for the fact their star isn't, say, Daniel Day-Lewis, the creators of The Odyssey limn an even more brooding, contemplative hero than exists in Homer's epic. The original Odysseus is a heavyweight to be sure, but he is also a fast-talking, spirited wheeler-dealer, famous for his cunning. The creators might have had fun with that aspect of his character. Instead, they have conjured up a guy who seems to be on a very long journey to find his missing Prozac, even when he is rolling around...

...takers under withering Russian assault in Pervomayskaya, Dagestan, vowed to fight to the death. Chechens escalated the conflict as Russian President Boris Yeltsin shook up his cabinet, replacing Presidential Chief of Staff Sergei Filatov, one of the last remaining liberals in his administration, with hawk Nikolai Yegorov. The developments limn the increasingly desperate straits of both the Chechen separatists and Russian president Boris Yeltsin. For Yeltsin, says TIME's J.F.O. Bird is Clint Eastwood's meditation on the pioneering jazzman junkie Charlie Parker; Wired adapts Bob Woodward's book about the life and drug-induced death of John Belushi. Both movies fit a familiar genre: a star is born, a star falls into the black hole of self- abuse, a star dies. ...scheming Chichikov (the splendid high baritone Igor Morozov), who would "buy" dead serfs in order to build a bogus prosperity on their collateral, holds the stage splendidly. The handsome duplex set by Designer Valery Levental is a sky- above, mudslinging-below construct. But beyond the "aria portraits" that graphically limn each of the principal characters, Dead Souls contains every cliche in the state manual, including the obligatory lament for the suffering people that has been a staple at least since Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov. The opera has just enough technique to work and not enough heart to make anyone care...
