...plot, which matters least of all, has to do with Fanny Brice's later years after her separation from Nicky Arnstein, who did her so bad in the original. Omar Sharif, forever limpid, shows up again as the ne'er-do-well gambler who tries to tempt Fanny away from Billy, but she rejects him. The ending is an occasion for a few tears and a little heartbreak; we well know from all the funny ladies of movie history that happiness does not come with success. Only producers might think otherwise, and they keep it to themselves...

...dual role of Odette-Odile in Swan Lake is one of ballet's supreme challenges, and there are many women who meet it with grace and liquid beauty. Plisetskaya, though, is unique. In the limpid forest glade scenes of Act II, most good dancers prettily suggest a girl imitating a swan. In a breathtaking act of theatrical magic, Plisetskaya somehow becomes a lovely humanoid swan giving a passable imitation of a shy maiden. This remarkable ballerina is now 48, and her short, chunky legs have clearly lost some of their spring. But Plisetskaya's legs seem almost secondary...

Jobriath gestures. The movements are familiar: mouth in a circle, eyes wide, the elbows cocked, the wrists limpid, the fingers splayed. The music rises in scintillating shimmers. Jobriath leaps backstage, and returns as a "Space Clown." Pink ruffled mask coyly over his eyes, pink satin G-string in place, Jobriath mimes juggling. He pirouettes gracefully. "You're a space clown. When you cry, you bring the sky down...

CATCH MY SOUL introduces Othello to John the Baptist, and they do not get along. A muddle of Shakespeare and Scripture, the movie is frenziedly directed by Patrick McGoohan, and set to an overabundance of limpid rock music. Singer Richie Havens shows up as Othello, here portrayed as a back-country evangelist, and lets fly with a song every few minutes. lago is enacted by one Lance Le Gault, whose previous employment as a choreographer on Elvis Presley movies comes as no surprise. He leaps into the air a lot, and sometimes comes down...

...Vincenzo Bellini's I Puritani. When she was done, Bellini was on his knees, the capacity audience at the New York State Theater on its feet for a long ovation. In post-World War II productions of Puritani, only Maria Callas has achieved anything to equal Sills' limpid coloration, melting lyricism and blissfully giddy personification of a heroine whose luxury it is to have both a mad scene and a happy ending...
