...returned to college and the new material was promising, though somewhat under weight. The work during the past six weeks, however, with the exception of the Columbia game last Saturday, has not been up to Pennsylvania's usual standard. While the backs have shown good ground-gaining abilities, the line has been very weak and easily broken up in nearly every game. The backs, notably Gardiner, have proved themselves to be powerful men, but they fail to receive the necessary support from the line. The principal fault of the team as a whole, is that it is too erratic...
...Gardiner, who plays right halfback, Pennsylvania has a strong and consistent ground-gainer. He is powerful on the offensive and a hard tackler on the defense. Of last year's men, McCabe at centre and Dale at quarterback are both playing good football. McCabe is one of the best line men on the team and is a thoroughly competent player. Dale runs back punts very skilfully, tackles well and uses excellent judgment in running the team...
...University football practice yesterday was used largely as a test of the team's defensive work. A great deal of the time was first spent in coaching the men individually and in drilling the ends, backs and linemen in separate groups. After this the first and second elevens lined up for a short scrimmage. On the whole the playing of the team was a trifle better than it was the day before. Immediately after the kickoff, the first team secured the ball on downs at the 30 yard line. Shea gained 5 yards, Kernan made the same distance around the end, Knowlton an Graydon advanced 8 yards in three plays, the former went through right guard for 5 yards and again for 6 yards, and from the 1 yard line Graydon made the only touchdown of the afternoon. During the remainder of the game the second eleven was allowed to keep the ball nearly the whole time, but was unable to make any impression on the first eleven's line...
Thirty Seniors, fourteen Juniors and twenty-two Sophomores practised yesterday afternoon for the upperclass football teams. The Seniors and Sophomores practised punting and running down on punts. These two squads then divided into elevens, and had short signal practices, after which they lined up for short scrimmages. The 1904 squad practised passing and kicking and went through some signal practice, but there was no line-up. The first two games of the interclass championship series will probably be played as follows: Seniors vs. Juniors, on Friday, November 14; Sophomores vs. Freshmen, on Tuesday, November...
