...about My Mother opens with dramatic cinematic technique as the camera in close focus follows an IV line. The sense of determinism continues to operate as an amorphous force in every subsequent scene. The next shot is a scene in an impeccably furnished apartment in Madrid. Manuela, an organ-transplant nurse played by Cecilia Roth (a luminary of the foreign film industry, with an uncanny ability to evoke tears) sits watching All About Eve with her son, Esteban (Eloy Azorin). Esteban is turning 17 the next day, and his eyes seem bright with literary genius and joie d'vivre...
...wash easily and vinyls even though they don't. She looks for combinations of colors and textures on the right side of flashy-bright and spectacular without being glitzy. She can be quite experimental in her choice of materials, constructing pants and jackets from yellow caution tape or police line. Despite the repetitive warnings of these pieces, Waddell's clothing crosses artistic boundaries, erring even into the horticultural. One of her current projects is a coat tailored entirely out of leaves--perhaps hazardous as autumnal wear, but certainly suitable for spring...
...these scenes--the sex is cold and mechanical, and feels overly choreographed. Since Jordan gives us little else to define the relationship by, it's difficult to feel emotionally involved in the film's later, tragic scenes. There's an interesting subtext in the novel regarding the oft-blurred line between physical and emotional love, but the film just zeroes in on the copulation and leaves the rest to the imagination. Call me reactionary, but it seems a little backward...
