Ever since Will Rogers first ambled onstage with his lariat, comedians have played the hick-in-the-big-city for big laughs and good money. The catalogue of house activities, the pats on and knives in the backs of the Masters, the listless recapitulation of the style peculiar to a particular House ("An eighteenth-century atmosphere has always clung about Adams House like a pervasive, occasionally smothering mist"), should be abandoned. There are remarkable parallels in the careers of the two men. though three centuries separate them. Individual freedom is the primary concern of both their lives.
