Ever since Will Rogers first ambled onstage with his lariat, comedians have played the hick-in-the-big-city for big laughs and good money. From Herb Shriner to George Gobel to Andy Griffith, dozens have twirled the same line - and still left enough rope for their lineal descendant, Dick Cavett. In a Greenwich Village nightclub last week, Cavett, 29, recited the doleful tale of his country boyhood in Nebraska. The story, as he tells it, is comical enough, and perhaps just true enough to serve as his public autobiography...
...Coats & Breeches. For them, passionate engagement led to a view of history where great men mattered as much as great forces, where men did not bow to impersonal trends but tried to bend them. Inside the trade, historians class these men as romantics, and Schlesinger is one of their lineal descendants. He sees history as Carlyle did -a panorama of "men in buff coats and breeches, with color in their cheeks, with passions in their stomachs, and the idioms, features and vitalities of very men." The romantic influence waned toward the end of the century, and most historians bowed...
Indeed, the most damning indictments of the old forms are the lineal descendents of umpteen previous Yearbooks retained in 329. Specifically, the House "vignettes" struggle to sustain the customary level of mediocrity (although Richard Kimmel's drawings of the Masters are superb). The catalogue of house activities, the pats on and knives in the backs of the Masters, the listless recapitulation of the style peculiar to a particular House ("An eighteenth-century atmosphere has always clung about Adams House like a pervasive, occasionally smothering mist"), should be abandoned. Why not a unified essay on the House system, the Masters, House...
...Senator Goldwater is a direct lineal descendant of the great Puritan preacher Roger Williams, who founded the colony of Rhode Island. There are remarkable parallels in the careers of the two men. though three centuries separate them. Individual freedom is the primary concern of both their lives. Williams wrote The Bloody Tenent of Persecution for the Cause of Conscience (1644), and Goldwater wrote The Conscience of a Conservative (1960). Williams led the fight against religious regimentation in his day, just as Goldwater leads the struggle against government regimentation in our times. Both were special friends to the American Indians...
ZINO FRANCESCATTI, 56, is a lineal musical descendant of Paganini: his Italian-born father, who emigrated to Marseille to become concertmaster of the local symphony, had studied with Paganini's only pupil. Fritz Kreisler happened to play in Marseille when Francescatti was a boy. and the youngster never got over it. His father wanted him to become a lawyer, but Francescatti had his mind made up; he would be a fiddler. He made a success ful Paris debut in 1925, later toured England with Maurice Ravel and English Soprano Maggie Teyte. He was already a major name in Europe...
