Without any new additions to the plot, the pace of the movie slows down to a lugubrious, ponderous crawl. Here, Costa-Gavras has unwisely strayed from his style. His specialty is the fast-paced, linear form, where events are linked together in some exciting sequence and the movie moves forward by inertia. In Z, first the lingering fate of the seriously injured central figure, then the unexpected slant taken by the prosecutor kept the excitement up. Here, the tension dies long before the prisoners do. And the irony, predictably, becomes heavy-handed. The Latin motto "Justitia", inscribed in mosaic...
...Sondheim, during a talk at Harvard last week, embellished on this a bit more: "I have an opera in mind--very unexperimental, very straight-forward, very linear--just about people screaming at each other. Lots of blood and horror...
Koopmans, a Dutch-born American at Yale University, and Kantorovich, of Moscow's Institute for Management of the People's Economy, were honored for developing "linear programming" or "activity analysis," techniques that are part of the computerization of the "dismal science." They enable capitalists and commissars alike to make the most efficient use of workers, machines and raw materials, and to determine how fast production should grow...
...only reality. A given bumper, a given roll-over had a certain, fixed value, and one's score was no more or less than the sum of those values. It was not long, however, before a second dimension was introduced, utterly transforming a phenomenon that had been purely linear: certain targets or combinations of targets were designed to change the schedule of reward. Thus a bumper might at first be worth 10; but an entirely different bumper--or a set of bumpers, or a hole, or an alley--could increase its value to 100. The pinball machine, at first...
...steel guitars. Deserts are psychedelic. But Garcia soon left the band, and after a stint touring with the Dead, the Riders began to work up a following of their own. But by this time, sans Garcia, they'd lost their spatial the dimension--their music became more linear and descriptive, more ridin-my-pony-to-San-Antone, with that Buddy Gage steel soaring nimbly overhead...
