...Babe," "Bang the Drum Slowly" and "The Scout" all filled the silver screen with pinstripes, and "Damn Yankees" filled a Broadway marquee. And who is the intangible god, the symbol of ultimate excellence in Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea"? The Great DiMaggio. And what written line better sums up the passing of a generation than Paul Simon's "Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you."? Simon was bemoaning the loss of heroes in America. He didn't foresee the coming of Reggie Jackson and Ron Guidry, of Derek Jeter...

...Looking Forward--David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young first album together since 1988's faltering American Dream--is grounded in the past. Neil Young, the proclaimed "Godfather of Grunge," actually seems mellow, and the album crosses the line separating eclectic and schizophrenic. It veers from the steel drum band sounds of "Faith in Me" to "Slowpoke," which has a mournful tone that is vintage Neil Young. From the cover, the name and the fact that he also released his previous album around Halloween, you might wonder whether Glampire might be some rip-off of the original glam scene. Glampire's third full album, The Heraldic Universe, walks the line between dark pop and post-teenage angst. The music is a mixture of goth, synth, perky rock beats, and tinges of NIN tonalities. Unfortunately, you'll have to deal with the cheesy '80s-style electric guitar in the opening tracks. Add in Glampire's androgynous voice to the back-to-back songs "Super Sad" and "Happy Again...

...newest film, based on the documentary Small Wonders--the account of Roberta Guaspari, a single mother who moves to East Harlem to teach the violin to underprivileged children. Even though the film moves a bit slowly at the beginning where Roberta's personal life is the dominant plot-line, Meryl Streep is (as always) refreshing in her portrayal of Guaspari and compensates for the slow start. Streep's characterization of the man-dependent and recently divorced Navy wife is humorous and real. She is a pathetic mess, crazed by the loss of the only role she's ever known--that...

...disgruntled journalist - nobody?s any the wiser about what really motivated the attack. "We wanted to save the Armenian people from perishing and restore its rights," Unanian said, but he articulated no clear political agenda or complaint. Although Unanian was known for his nationalist views and hard line on Armenia?s conflict with neighboring Azerbaijan, so was Prime Minister Vazgen Sarkisian, whom he shot at point-blank range. In the end, all the gunmen demanded were guarantees for their personal safety. But the military wants heads to roll in the cabinet, and that could put it on a collision course...
