...real depth of knowledge must be sought outside the course system as it now exists. Take an example. Suppose a student wants to study Dante from the psychological point of view. Where should he turn? Clearly, the course of the "great ideas" professor is not the place, and the linguist would probably laugh. And the Renaissance historian would say it was unimportant to his course, and the practicing psychologist is probably so wound up in his own pursuits that he could only offer a few "behavioral patterns" as guides. The student certainly should draw upon all of these authorities...
Outdoor Mass. Manhattan's San Juan fiesta was held on the campus of Fordham University. In charge was handsome, energetic Msgr. Joseph F. Connolly. Working with him was young (29) Father Ivan Illich, Austrian-born Roman-trained linguist whose work among Manhattan Puerto Ricans was recently recognized by Francis Cardinal Spellman, who asked him to serve as vice rector of the Catholic University in San Juan. (The Cardinal also had 22 of the Diocese's newly ordained priests study Spanish at Georgetown University, sent eight New York priests to serve temporarily in Puerto Rico.) I feel, though, that Father Davis has overlooked the deeper meaning of the old fairy tale of Rumpelstiltskin and the old rule that "the baby has to have a name." The excesses of the advertisers are merely proof that the Biblical injunction to Adam that he give names to the things of the earth is getting harder every...
...report saw a great need for an anthropological linguist. "The highly developed state of linguistics and the importance of the field to the anthropologist make the absence of the person who is primarily a linguist our most conspicuous weakness in the field. "If we ever get another permanent appointment," Willey said, "a linguist is what we would like to have...
