Four of the Seattle seven (Darlene Beckford, Kristen Linsley, Martha Clabby, and Becky Rogers) will reunite as last year's national record-setting 2-mile relay team. The versatile Beckford may be running anything from the 440 to the two-mile event, if not all of them. The sophomore set the national indoor college mile record last year. Junior Mary Hurlihy, who ran sub-five minute miles in high school, looks equally strong this year. A Beckford Hurlihy combination could produce a tough one-two punch in the mile...

For Diaz, whose mother made the trip out from Chicago, it earned her a proud parent and a dinner for the team on the dockside of beautiful Puget Sound...
When the same thing happened a few meets later at the Greater Boston Championships, Rogers recalls former harrier captain Sarah Linsley advising her at the finish line to swallow her disappointment and become a strong, enthusiastic captain despite her personal performances. Linsley's words were apparently not taken in vain, for Rogers has been running more relaxed, faster races ever since, and her ability as a team leader is beyond dispute...
