Ruth rapidly became not only the Sultan of Swat but an aspiring social lion awkwardly eager to say the right thing. The rude, uneducated kid from Baltimore's waterfront once convulsed guests at a formal dinner party by spurning a plate of asparagus. "Asparagus," he explained to his hostess in his politest tones, "makes my urine smell." Asparagus, though, was about the only thing that Ruth would not eat. He used to munch hot dogs during practice sessions with the Yankees, once put away an omelet made of 18 eggs and three big slices of ham. He was equally...

...cent of the average full-time salary for men. Rather than narrowing, the gap is getting wider. In 1972, women earned only 59 per cent as much as men. And predictably enough, it is the blue-collar women workers, who can least afford to, who have shouldered the lion's share of that inequity. And as Seifer details, they have shouldered even more--the deadly tedium of the only kind of jobs they can get, and their own guilt and their husbands' resentment that they are working...

After the Crusades, during which Richard Coeur-de-Lion conquered the island on his way to the Holy Land, Cyprus fell to the Franks and then to the Venetians. In 1570 the Turks arrived, carrying the standard of the Ottoman Empire. From the start, the Turkish rulers demonstrated a ferocity that the inhabitants of Cyprus never forgot. About 30,000 Turkish soldiers were granted land on Cyprus, encouraging...

...attentiveness to convey Brick's inattentiveness convincingly, whether he is just lying down with closed eyes, gazing off into space, or whistling about the light of the silvery moon, quite oblivious of what Maggie is saying. Eventually he is goaded into action, and uses a chair as a circus lion-tamer does. In the great scene with Big Daddy, he performs with the right tempi and with shattering intensity. Still, it is a weakness of the script that Williams has not given us a fully-rounded portrait of Brick; we really know less about him than we do about...

Toothless Lion. The slow, low-keyed coup is working; by week's end the leaders were reaching their goals. They had arrested most of the people on their list, including former Foreign Minister Menassie Haile, 44, onetime ambassador to Washington, and Ras Asrata Kassa, 56, who is Haile Selassie's closest adviser. In meetings with Endalkachew and the Emperor, the committee dictated terms that were hastily accepted. These include an imprimatur over six key ministries, including Defense and Interior; amnesty for political prisoners; plus a special session of Parliament to carry out constitutional reform...
