Unhappily for the Republicans, the election was an almost perfect laboratory test of their prospects for the fall. "If it sells in Grand Rapids, it will sell anywhere," market researchers are fond of saying about an area where all kinds of products are routinely tested, from Lipton's soup to Cornnuts. In many ways, the district is a cross section of the U.S., with a varied mix of incomes and ethnic groups, a blue-collar class that is suffering from increasing unemployment and a not-so-silent majority that is outraged by inflation, long lines at gasoline stations...

After all, they see the same swingy plays and movies as everyone else; they read the same magazine articles earnestly explaining how the multitudes have abandoned the old taboos. So one from Column A (Carmine Ciardi) and one from Column B (Lynne Lipton) feel a certain social obligation to try mate swapping...
Their spouses (Cynthia Harris and Andrew Duncan) are more hang-backish - or hung-uppish. But it is Lynne Lipton who precipitates the movie's sketch-sized dramatic crisis. How, she inquires, can she have an affair with a man whose wife has been such a good sport about losing at strip hide-and-go-seek? Ciardi sulks, then has a mystical experience in which one of the heavenly host informs him that, up there, adultery ranks with crimes like parking in a loading zone. Thus reassured, the couple almost manages to do the fashionable thing - only to be defeated...
Perhaps the best songs presented during the show were Hunt's Fly on the Wall and Davis's Grandfather's Gifts. The former is a long piece with an extended instrumental portion in which all four members perform solos, the most memorable being Lipton's cello which musically colors the image of the fly on the wall. The first chorus captures concisely the crippled feelings of a stunned lover...
...hard driving side of their music present in songs like One More Question, Get Down on Your Knees, Keep the Crying From Me, and, as mentioned. You Can't Always Get. Though the group has no drummer, the percussion section made up of Connet's claves and tambourine and Lipton's punctuating bass patterns add the backbone necessary to carry the beat of these songs, building them into some real foot-stamping numbers. Get Down has real potential to become a Top 40 tune should the Falloon move in that direction...
