...Force announced last week that it is canceling its air-to-ground missile Rascal, now surpassed by the longer-range Hound Dog. Due soon, on orders from the President, is an appallingly long-delayed decision between the rival liquid-fuel intermediate-range ballistic missiles, the Air Force's Thor and the Army's Jupiter. Last week's splendid 6,300-mile performance by Atlas may also firm a tentative decision to slow down on or drop the Air Force's alternative intercontinental ballistic missile Titan. Also to be cut back or discarded: the Navy...
...different weapons system of Minuteman solid-fuel missiles, ready for rapid launching from invulnerable underground nests (TIME, March 10). Under the pressure of the budget ceiling, Air Force brains are asking: Why sink most of our development and procurement funds over the next few years into B-58s and liquid-fuel ICBMs that will become obsolete as the Minuteman system builds up? Why not divert some of that money into speeding up Minuteman? With that idea in mind, the Air Force wants to spend more than ten times as much on Minuteman in 1960 as it is spending this year...
...lightness that they allow in a nose cone. A solid-fuel missile like the projected Air Force Minuteman ICBM (due in 1963) would be badly overloaded with a heavy copper nose. Now the Minuteman will reportedly get a sharper, ablative nose, as may later advanced versions of the liquid-fuel Atlas and Titan, thus returning advanced missilery to orthodox streamlining...
Thiokol has set its most ambitious expansion for next week: a merger with Reaction Motors Inc., a major maker of liquid-fuel rocket engines (TIME, May 27), owned 49% by Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. and 23% by Laurance Rockefeller. The merger will give Thiokol all of Reaction's $16.5 million missile contracts, including those for the liquid rocket engines for North American's piloted X-15 plane, which is expected to climb to 100 miles, and may well be the first step to manned outer-space travel. With Reaction (1957 sales: $24 million) Thiokol expects to swell...
MISSILE TURNABOUT by the Army, which previously researched and developed its own tactical missiles, will give Baltimore's Martin Co. job of developing Pershing solid-fuel rocket (range: about 800 miles) to replace liquid-fuel Redstone (range: 200 miles...
