Three years later, Gale's living room is still dominated by an old picture-tube clunker. He routinely stops in Best Buy and Circuit City stores to compare prices, but the model he craves, a 45-in. cutting-edge liquid-crystal display (LCD) TV, has a $7,000 price tag--twice what Gale is willing to spend. "These things are still prohibitively expensive," Gale laments...
Consider the LCDs on our watches, cell phones, PDAs, laptops and, increasingly, TVs. Liquid crystals were discovered in 1888 by Friedrich Reinitzer, an Austrian botanist, and named a year later by Otto Lehman, a German physicist. Since then, they have taken a leisurely route to our homes. The first prototype display emerged from RCA's Sarnoff Research Center in 1968. Two years later, Optel began producing the first watches with an LCD. I first got a computer with an LCD (an Apple Portable) 15 years ago. Further north, the Canal St.-Martin attracts a bohemian, red-checked tablecloth crowd, while the Pont des Arts footbridge spanning the Seine is a hot spot for more liquid picnics. Technically, picnicking in the city center is forbidden, notes a town hall spokesperson, but in practice it's tolerated in small groups and even large ones are commonplace...
...wake of the ambush, the Marines are making their move. Peeling off the main road, the vehicles roar through dirt and trash toward Market Street, kicking up a thick liquid that sprays troops in the trucks. "Please tell me that wasn't sewage," says one, though the smell leaves no doubt. Gunnery Sergeant Michael Miller's Humvee turns south and stops near the casualties - one hit in the arm, the other in the leg - who are loaded into an ambulance as squad mates aim rifles down the alley from which they took fire...
...Nobel award in Chemistry went to the Coca-Cola Company of Great Britain, “for using advanced technology to convert liquid from the River Thames into Dasani, a transparent form of water, which for precautionary reasons has been made unavailable to customers.” No one from the company was present to acknowledge the award, but Hershbach used his chemical expertise to explain the magnitude of the achievement. Dasani, he said, had twice the legal limit of toxic bromates...
