...really enjoyed Lisa McLaughlin's articleon communal dining [June 25]. The best example I've seen is Bully's East Restaurant in San Diego, which has a horseshoe-shaped bar at table level. The shape is essential because everyone slightly faces one another, making conversation more agreeable. It is wonderful for solo diners...

...Lisa Cullen's July 2 Essay "Demoting the Dog" arrived just in time to explain the torment I experienced when my master's daughter visited with the first grandchild. I thought I was "top dog" since the kids moved out of the house, but now I am close to being an entre in an exotic restaurant. Since this new arrival seems to eat constantly, I thought eating a loaf of bread and all the bagels might be endearing, but no. Chewing up the breast pump didn't go over well either. My only hope...
