...list as miserly and pretentious as the spirit that drew it up. Indeed, working through A Writer's People is rather like listening to the postprandial monologue of a cantankerous old guest at a literary dinner. One is at first amused by all the iconoclasm: After all, why should the reputations of Powell or Chaudhuri matter these days? One then begins to demur: Is Philip Larkin really a "minor" poet? Is the Caribbean really a place of "spiritual emptiness"? Finally one balks completely - at Naipaul's tiresome insistence on referring to the black population of Trinidad as "Negroes," for example...

...Inevitably, some purists are voicing objections to what they see as the bastardization of a Chinese cultural icon. Zhang's relentless promotion of modernized Kunqu - he thinks nothing of hiring out performers for appearances in shopping malls and as entertainment at A-list cocktail parties - hasn't helped. "Kunqu should be left alone," says Gu Duhuang, a veteran Kunqu director from Suzhou and one of the most virulent critics. "It is heritage and no heritage needs to be modernized." When it comes to attracting the coveted women's vote, Michelman has no choice but to focus on grass-roots outreach. Hillary Clinton has the endorsements of NOW and Emily's List, and her campaign has been redoubling attention to Clinton's chance to make history, issuing a memo highlighting her support among women and touting her appearance on The View. Michelman is happy to see a woman running but says, "It's more important to change history than to make history...
