Chinese lurking in the shadows tried to decoy U.S. litter-bearers by calling, "Medic, medic!" but their accents were unconvincing. One medic, Pfc. Carl Francis of Versailles, Ohio, fired his carbine until he was out of ammo, then ran. Three Chinese ran after him, and one threw a grenade. It exploded close behind him, hurling him unconscious into the mud.
