...Gary, Indiana, where nearly 90% of the residents are black, elected Democrat Scott King their first white mayor in 28 years. In San Francisco, Willie Brown, California's flamboyant former state-assembly speaker, faces a Dec. 12 runoff against decidedly unflamboyant incumbent Frank Jordan (who weirdly sought to liven up his image shortly before the election by showering in the nude with two local disc jockeys). In Baltimore and Philadelphia, no surprises: Democratic incumbents Kurt Schmoke and Edward Rendell won easily...

...will take more than sweatshirts and coffee mugs to shore up the security of the Internet. The network was designed to be open and easily accessible, and new Internet software, like Sun Microsystems' Java, adds a whole new layer of insecurity. Java can liven up a Website with movies and animations sent to visitors' computers as little applications, or "applets." ...assembled a prestigious lineup sure to attract attention, the foursome cannot overcome their natural soloistic inclinations. To me, this comes across more as a quadruple concerto than as chamber music. They clearly try to make an effort at ensemble, but Stern refuses to bend his pitches down and to liven his dry tone, Ax hardly ever thinks of balance, Laredo gets lost in the acoustic din when not playing his solos, all while Yo-Yo Ma tries to play down the middle...
