There's a little something of Bob Hope in Dr. Sid. Specifically, it's the liver spots on Sid's cueball forehead and the thick blue vein down the side of his temple. The tufts of white hair around the back were inspired by photos of Sean Connery, among many others, while the sixtysomething scientist's aged pores and wrinkles have been drawn from thousands of images of lesser-known maturing gentlemen. The group says firemen and paramedics are at a higher risk for hepatitis C, which causes inflammation of the liver and, if untreated, can lead to death...
Proof at the genetic level that origin means more than location is coming in. Researchers at Stanford have been studying liver, breast, prostate and lung cancers for clues to their telltale molecular fingerprints. Using microarrays to sense which genes are turned on in sample tissues, says geneticist Charles Perou, the Stanford team has discovered that most of the genes expressed by both normal breast cells and primary-breast-cancer cells are similar, and so are cells for normal lung tissue and lung cancer, normal prostate and prostate cancer, and so on--which should ultimately give doctors biochemical identifiers to guide...

While creatine is a natural compound, created out of three amino acids, doctors are concerned by reported side effects from apparent overdoses, including dehydration, muscle and ligament tears, diarrhea and kidney failure...
Many of you readers will graduate college this week. More accurately, many of you have grandchildren who will graduate this week, and I ask you to pass this on to them with your cold, brittle, liver-spotted hands. For even though no university, junior college or turtle/pirate/parrot-drawing-by-mail school responded to my offer to deliver a commencement speech, I have advice far more useful than applying sunscreen or respecting your elders...
