Nobody's talking impeachment at the Emporia Livestock Sale Barn on Friday. It's almost noon, and a cattle auction is in progress. The drone of the auctioneer tells the story, head by head. Cows are going for between 27[cents] and 31[cents] per lb.--salvage price by local standards. "Should be 40[cents]," mutters Loren Wagaman, 79, a rancher taking a coffee break. Philip Bender chimes in. "They're not working for us in Washington," he says, paying for a cinnamon bun. "We're little peons to them. They don't give a dang about whether we make...

...rest of America's 115,000 hog farmers may as well give their animals away (some are doing that). His 220-lb. pigs, which a little over a year ago fetched 60[cents] per lb., now command around 15[cents] per lb. When he's not selling his livestock at a loss, he's trying to rearrange his bank payments and save his century-old family farm from going under. "We're getting killed out here," he says...

...what doctors intend is not necessarily what's going to happen. Indeed, the technology that permitted the Collinses family to pick the sex of their child was first used to select for health, not gender per se. Adapting a technique used on livestock, researchers at the Genetics & IVF Institute in Fairfax took advantage of a simple rule of biology: girls have two X chromosomes, while boys have one X and one Y. The mother has only Xs to offer, so the balance of power lies with the father--specifically with his sperm, which brings either...

...Pharaoh refuses. And so, at Moses' direction, Moses' brother Aaron touches the Nile with his staff, and it turns to blood. Egypt is then infested successively by frogs, gnats, flies, a pestilence on livestock, boils on people and beasts, hail, locusts and "a darkness that can be touched." Scientific skeptics have assigned them myriad natural explanations, including a comet and a volcanic eruption on the Mediterranean island of Santorini. The most ingenious effort is an ecological domino theory proposed in the 1950s by a scholar named Greta Hort: the Nile's many tributaries flood, infesting the great river with blood...

...movie doesn't have its humorous moments. In one scene, Jake helps a police officer get his estranged girlfriend back by composing a song "Oh Marjorie," sung to the tune of "Oh Christmas tree." The sight of the officer bleating out the song in a steak joint as livestock baa in the background is silly (and desperate) enough to be mildly amusing. Still, it's the sort of scene that you know has been done before--a feeling we seem to get often; a class nerd gets shoved into a locker, carollers disperse before an advancing runaway sleigh, the mistletoe...
