...death-in 1795-and after him it was held by Professor Kingsley from 1805 to 1817. There is abundant evidence that his interpretation of the field of ecclesiastical history was a very wide one; it was simply that he, an ecclesiastic, taught general history. I should be very loath to say that this professorship was the first introduction of history into our curriculum: but I do not know that the earlier stages of its career have ever been traced...
...grudge against Harvard; but it is a still greater pity that he should so far forget himself at a public dinner as to speak in such ungentlemanly and ungenerous terms of a defeated rival. There are, of course, two explanations: Either Captain Peters is no gentleman - which we are loath to suppose - or he was so under the influence of sparkling Hock and iced Moselle that he did not know what he was talking about. And so we dismiss his words as unworthy of further comment, for we are sure that they did not voice the thoughts of all wearers...
...fire escapes, why not hand grenades? This is an age of improvements and this university is, or makes frequent claims to be, the patron of all things progressive. Why not the latest preventative for fires? Several years ago the authorities, tired of being reminded that the lives of the students under their charge were in imminent danger in case of fire, had a trial of fire escapes to appease the clamors...
...long looked forward to by the students. It was, however, more fortunate that the marshal in charge was able to postpone it until a more favorable opportunity. No one would have relished marching in such a rain storm as we had last night, and yet all would have been loath to forego the pleasures anticipated from this great event which comes but once in a lifetime. We can only wait and hope that the weather on Monday evening will be all that could be desired and shall then expect to see the college turn out en masse and enjoy itself...
...dark. It has always been a custom for students to invite ladies to these games, and we never noticed that many of them were of the chaperone class. The young ladies with their gay colors are a considerable attraction at all the great matches, and the students would be loath to see the day when they would be no longer able to bring them. As to chaperones, we can only repeat our former assertion that they are decidedly the exception, and not the rule, by any means...
