...Republicans’ cynical delaying tactics are designed to force the Democrats into entering the mid-term elections of 2010 empty-handed. In doing so, the Republicans are assuring a legislative dead-lock at a time when our country desperately needs new ideas and approaches. It seems that substance-less populism and counter-productive anti-government sentiment are in danger of carrying the day, especially if Democrats like Ms. Meyer are already willing to throw their president to the dogs. Does she really believe that the Palins, Boehners and Cantors of the world will deliver more jobs, better health-care...

These are all valid criticisms, but they fail to capture the real source of Americans’ frustration. It's something more pernicious: the vapor lock that seems to have seized Toyota's mythologized corporate culture and turned one of the most admired companies in the world into a bunch of flailing gearheads. Not only is Toyota producing more flawed cars than in the past, but an organization known for its unrivaled ability to suss...

...story is like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels meets The Golden Girls, with a slightly odd, Germanic twist. Angry about losing $3.5 million in investments last year in the recession, a wily gang of German pensioners were bent on revenge, prosecutors say. So they allegedly did what some who've lost fortunes in the downturn have probably thought about at one point or another: they allegedly abducted their financial adviser and locked him in a cellar for days, demanding he help them get their money back. Now the retirees - all over the age of 60 - are on trial...
