...understandable. Except for the announcement of the running mate, today's conventions are indeed about as unpredictable as a pregame locker-room speech, all hype and balloons and no suspense. We know who wins. We only hear what the party planners decide we should. And news organizations are starting to wonder whether they should keep playing along. NBC will leave the bulk of the coverage to sister MSNBC; CBS would probably be better off with 'Survivor' reruns, akin to MNF's August 15 game, Tennessee vs. St. Louis, a rerun of last year's Super Bowl. At least next January...

...Cambridge World Fund's meeting has a jockeying, locker-room feel. As they settle down, they curse their unlucky trades and make jokes to impress each other. There are only men in the room, although they say that about half of their stockholders are women. However, all the officers are men. Sinhababu says that he thought women would actually be better at the stock market, although they tend to participate in it less, because they would not get as excited by jumps and falls. ...wonder. No President has mentioned the American People as incessantly as President Clinton. (We talk about him an awful lot too.) He presents himself by turns as the American People's benefactor, slave and towel-snapping locker-room pal. In his rhetoric the American People, for their part, serve alternately as a goad, an inspiration, a shaming device and, of course, an excuse. "I need to go back to work for the American People," he notoriously said on Jan. 26, and then refused to discuss the Lewinsky scandal for almost seven months. Too busy. The American People's work really...

...shameless President. Somehow we must keep the moral and ethical issues in the forefront and resolve them in such a way that our children have positive examples to pattern their lives on. It is unfortunate that the moral issue in this case involves sex. The American penchant for locker-room humor has permitted the immorality of President Clinton's behavior to become clouded, at least, and perhaps even approved of by a cadre of admiring misfits with no respect for the vulnerability of the young.
