...last week, prospectors were racing into the Lynn Lake area by bush plane. Flyers who circled Lynn Lake saw so many snowshoe tracks on the ground they looked like chicken runs. Around the lake a busy settlement had sprung up. Log cabins and prefabricated houses had been hauled north on sleighs. Tractor trains clanked in from Sherridon carrying hundreds of tons of supplies at a time. (On the return trip they carried back ore for extraction at a pilot plant set up in Sherridon.) There was talk of laying a spur railroad line from Sherridon north to Lynn Lake...
...When sudden spring floods washed out two of the longest temporary bridges north of Changsha last April, Director Tu put on three shifts of laborers, working day & night. The engineers managed to sink heavy loads of log piles, through unprecedentedly high water. Somehow, without modern diving equipment, timber superstructure had to be fastened to piles as much as 30 feet under water. Again the coolies' bitter strength saved the day. ...main enclosure, 185 ft. long by 115 ft. wide, has thick walls up to 40-ft. high built of basalt columns laid crosswise, rather like the logs of a log cabin. Huge rough steps lead to a courtyard. Inside is another wall, and inside that a stone-roofed vault. The man-made islets are separated by shallow canals, some of them choked with tumbled blocks. The citadel itself is in fair condition, though so overgrown with jungle that few details are visible...
