Everything from the gothic scenery to the story’s vaudevillian tone seeps through Guillermo Navarro’s vibrant photography and Del Toro’s script, as full of thrills as it is of an anti-formulaic, self-aware logic. Ron Perlman, of TV’s Beauty and the Beast fame, has the chops (and the eyebrows and the jawbones) to deliver Hellboy’s throwaway one-liners and punches with the appropriate devil-may-care élan: he’s Dirty Harry with a penchant for beer and pancakes, a superhero-everyman...
Partially as a result of the first factor, and partially as a consequence of the rise of constructivist thought in pedagogy, the educational system fails to teach students about the march of human knowledge. Students are not given adequate background in basic logic and classical thought, and are thus not able to assess modern-day issues in their appropriate context. Their lack of training in logic leads to obvious complications. This also creates the problem that students are unable to engage when they are taken away from familiar ground...
Perhaps most telling, my dorm mates preferred to watch The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’s commentary on the presidential debates above any news sources. Of course, in a culture that prioritizes snippy phrases over cogent logic, the ultimate broadcaster is Jon Stewart. Logic would seem to dictate that turning oneself over to employees of the University after losing 12 consecutive games of beer pong must result in disciplinary action. As such, many freshmen interviewed for this story said that, prior to treatment, they would not have gone to UHS for alcohol-related maladies except, perhaps, as a very last resort...
...bait and taunt Nader with questions such as: “How do you feel knowing that over 1,000 people died in Iraq because you ran for president?” For his part, Nader responded obstinately, often attacking the questioner instead of his or her logic. Throughout the question and answer session a contingent of Lyndon LaRouche supporters also rudely catcalled, heckled and chanted over Nader and other attendees in a fairly base display of disrespect...
