These magnificent dresses-them selves worth a visit to the show-provide the dramatic centerpiece for the exhibition that lacks logic. Vreeland's practice of organizing the Met's fashion displays by color, mood, line and occasionally whim is not satisfactory. It is impossible to trace Saint Laurent's career or to see the variety in a given year without making the crowded circuit several times and squinting down at the labels. This is particularly frustrating, since the exhibition rooms, possibly suggesting the museum's priorities, are cramped and poky. One strategy might...
...MAIN STRENGTH of Pesetsky's novel lies in the character of the narrator-protagonist herself. Never whining, rarely dogmatic, she makes everything in her quirky tale seem perfectly probable, so internalized is the logic. At times, however, the feminist themes do turn reductonist. During one of Harry's visits home, the teenage daughter is wondering whether to take carpentry or ballet as a school elective. Not only is it a significant reference work, but it may just spark a valuable rethinking of the battle lines of the war that directly affects...
...West European electorate that the Cruise and Pershing 2 missiles are part of an American effort either to launch a first strike against the Soviet Union and or to limit a nuclear war to Europe the peace movement's vision of "Euroshima" flies in the face of the logic of the NATO decision: to visibly and tangibly reinforce "extended deterrence," that is, the coupling of the defense of Western Europe to the American nuclear arsenal in the face of a growing military threat which does not directly affect the territory of the United States...
