With bland pop fare ruling American radio and the once popular Lollapalooza tour falling by the wayside, this year's Africa Fete offers a compelling summer alternative. "The attraction is that this is some of the most exciting music on the planet," says Blackwell. "It's ancient and it's modern at the same time. Sleigh bells, whistles and peaceful piano sounds define the wholly unoriginal music which matches the lackluster lyrics. Nevertheless, the Pumpkins...
...they did improve upon the tried and true. This was concert as subtle interpretation, a process of intelligent selection that brought out trademark opening bass riffs, for example, but chose to twist slightly the solemn hollering of "Mountain Song." Overcoming the odds, the band and the man who founded Lollapalooza had a very convincing, very good relapse, with music so full you could breathe...
