...past decade there have been great advances in the treatment of impotence, which is now seen by most therapists, in most cases, as a physiological rather than a psychological problem, rejecting the medical establishment's long-held view. The word impotence itself, like "frigidity" for women, is considered suspect in many circles; the more politically correct--or at least clinical--term is erectile dysfunction, or ED, as it is commonly abbreviated. ...because the gifts he brought to resolving the conflict reflected very much who he was as a man. He began with a common-sense conviction that the Soviets were not a people to be contained but a system to be defeated. The atmosphere is fickle, they observe. Storms form, then quickly dissipate, so whatever information they contain about the conditions that created them is quickly lost. By contrast, ocean gyres take anywhere from 10 to 20 years to complete a single journey, making them perfect vehicles for transmitting messages into the future. With the exception of the tropical Pacific, unfortunately, the oceans are even less well monitored than the surface...
