...Having said this, however, it is a pity that the dancing does not always live up to the enchanting effect produced by the scenery, lighting and costumes. Luckily, dancing alone is not the focal point of this classic holiday performance. It is a long ballet, longer than most at two hours, and includes a continuous change of scenery and characters, posing a particularly difficult feat for choreographers. Also, a large part of the action relies on children, who despite their training at the Boston Ballet School, inevitably lack the precision that comes with years of training. Perhaps a reflection...
Just as actors often have burning desires to direct, music producers frequently long to be behind the microphone, and Steve Tyrell is no exception. Having contributed to the Father of the Bride soundtracks, Tyrell has decided to try his hand at a full length project, A New Standard, composed entirely of jazz standards (doubling, naturally, on producing duties). The execution is something fairly uneven. While works penned by Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern can never be truly faulted, Tyrell doesn't possess the vocal versatility to make them twinkle with true allure. "Give Me the Simple Life" caters...
...Edition may end up facing the same fate, since Saturday 3 AM offers up only an uneven collection of remixes. From the German ber-DJ Paul Van Dyk's entrancing hi-octane remix of "Bring My Family Back" to the inane End of the Road mix of "Take the Long Way Home," the remixes show how high and how low a mix of a song can go. Still, Darabont is careful not to waste any screentime on dull moments; there's plenty of action to offset the unusually long running time. As the film progresses, the tone remains predominantly serious (befitting a story set on Death Row), interspersed with lighter scenes of optimism and hope. Edgecomb's urinary problems, painful as they are to watch, provide a small degree of comic relief, but the main source of smiles comes...
Many civil rights advocates have long been troubled by the apparent inequities of Internet use, and May's Commerce report bears out their fears: 47 percent of whites own computers, but fewer than half as many blacks do. And, according to the study, it's not just economics that's keeping computers out of reach for so many minority kids. A child from a low-income white family is three times more likely to have Internet access than a child from a black family with a comparable income - and four times more likely than a Hispanic child. That disparity, says...
