SPORTS ILLUSTRATED was two years old when Laguerre was assigned to cover the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina for Time Inc. His reporting, and perhaps the reputation he had earned as "the sage of Longchamp and Ascot" for his expertise as a handicapper of thoroughbred race horses, persuaded Henry R. Luce to transfer Laguerre to his new sports magazine as assistant managing editor.
