...While the press tends to obsess over who has the majority of the House and Senate in Washington, it is the gubernatorial contests that can have as much or more impact on America's governance, policy and politics in the long run. Republicans still hold their share of big-state governors' mansions, but Democrats have in recent years controlled the top seats in key battleground states such as Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ohio. Now, the GOP has a very good chance to take over all of those states, while hanging on to many of the slots they already have...
...After a years-long drought of new compelling policy ideas from either party at the national level, it is instructive to recall how many influential 1980s and 1990s reform programs on welfare, education, job training and economic development emerged from state capitals, several of them controlled by Republican chief executives. Back in the 1990s, when Republicans such as California's Pete Wilson, Illinois' Jim Edgar, Michigan's John Engler, Wisconsin's Tommy Thompson and Pennsylvania's Tom Ridge were in office, conservative policy ideas and Republican electoral prospects were in ascendancy...
...Carrefour-Feuilles, at least, cash-for-work also encourages local entrepreneurship. Much of the recyclable waste collected from the rubble there is used to make long-burning fuel bricks for cooking, manufactured with equipment workers helped design and build. The venture is an economic engine for the bidonville and a sustainable one as well, since it provides an alternative to the traditional charcoal fuel that has contributed to Haiti's vast deforestation...
Granted, Haiti, a republic founded by former slaves who won their independence from France in 1801, has long been at a disadvantage thanks to lingering discrimination in the hemisphere and the world. (The U.S. wouldn't recognize Haiti until 1862, and Nicolas Sarkozy's visit there two weeks ago was, remarkably, the first ever by a French head of state.) As a result, the international community needs to give the country more comprehensive help than it's offered in the past. But such aid should not be delivered without an acknowledgment by Haiti's ultra-venal political and economic...
...beyond these shores, let's also appreciate a stunning development: Team U.S.A. kicked a ton of butt. The U.S. topped the medals table, winning 37 in all, the most by any single country in Winter Olympics history. The heavily hyped faces, like snowboarder Shaun White, downhill skier Lindsey Vonn, long-track speed skater Shani Davis, men's figure skater Evan Lysacek, all delivered golds. Apolo Ohno now has eight medals, more than any other U.S. Winter Olympian. Bode Miller, the Torino pariah who came out of retirement to give the Olympics one more go, showed that when expectations are lifted...
