TIME'S editors, bemused by gout, evidently have never leapt walls. In your issue of Jan. 17 you show a picture of Britain's gaitered Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain "leaping" a stone wall. Look more closely. There is a ladder in the right-hand corner. Mr. Chamberlain has climbed up the ladder and is now gingerly stepping off. He is going to land stiff-legged at that. He will probably wryly agree that a leap should be goaty, not gouty...

Paul Reynaud is often called "The Most Traveled French Statesman." He makes frequent trips to Mexico to look after property he inherited from his grandfather. Before he took up politics he practiced law. In Indo-China, where Communists have had notable success in fomenting native unrest, M. Reynaud helped restore order when he was Minister of the Colonies (TIME, Nov. 2, 1931). Aged 58, he looks younger, annoys the earnest Left with his barbed Gallic wit, his habitually ironic mien. The Moderate Left acknowledged him the leading exponent of the moderate Right. Excepting Bonnet, no Premier cared to form...

Flautists. At the Reinhardt Galleries, 26 paintings by Spaniard Hipolito Hidalgo de Caviedes gave Manhattanites their first good look at the work of the Carnegie First Prize Winner of 1935. A specialist in china-clear coloring and slightly rococo composition, Artist de Caviedes brought none of his paintings with him when he hurriedly left Madrid a year ago, last week displayed mostly new pictures done in Cuba, including a starchy self-portrait (see cut). Hard for hard- shelled critics to resist were his cloudless canvases of Jark-skinned Cuban musicians and dancers, bright still-lifes, chic panels entitled Angel Musicians...
