...Certain frauds are easy to sniff out once you know to look for them. A lot seems wrong with an ad to make $500 in two days that explains "the world have gone to the extend on make money with every means you can get you hand on" and then asks for "Status Of Job You Into." Less blatant red flags include e-mail addresses with domains like Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo! and Rediffmail (an Indian outfit) - most legitimate hirers have e-mail addresses from their companies. A company or recruiter that asks for your bank account or credit-card number...
These scientists aren't the first to look at the chemistry of foraminifera; the fossils are abundant in ancient ocean sediments, so they're a particularly good tracer of the past. But they used a new technique to measure CO2: looking at how much of the element boron was present in the foraminifera's shells. When there's lots of CO2 in the air, there's also more in the top layers of seawater, where the relevant species of foraminifera live. That makes the water more acidic, which in turn makes the tiny animals incorporate less boron into their shells...
...take the new result seriously, they're not quite ready to buy into it completely. "It's a really worthwhile and bold effort to understand a period we have a hard time explaining," says Ed Boyle, a professor of ocean geochemistry at MIT. "My cautious view is that this looks promising right now, but I've been studying chemical tracers in foraminifera for pretty much my whole career, and there are often unexpected twists and turns." It is, he says, "the kind of thing where they may turn out to be right, and we'll look back in five years...
...really pretty simple: if he believes McChrystal can turn things around by getting all the troops he seeks, Obama will agree (most likely minus a small Commander in Chief tax to show who's really in charge). But if McChrystal can't promise something resembling success by 2012, look for Obama to shift to a more modest strategy, with more modest goals, and paint it as realism rather than retreat...
Washington's delegate, Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton, says that even the GOP leadership is uninterested in making it an issue. "I don't think people are looking for a fight they're going to lose," she says. She predicts little fuss, except from "back benchers." How much of a political issue the bill will create won't be known for some time. Jennifer E. Duffy, political analyst and editor with the Cook Political Report, says any political grist for Republicans will probably depend on the level of opposition in Congress and how the issue is raised. Republicans could look...
