Dartmouth College Library has no security. Neither does the Divinity School. Theoretically, one could walk out of each with a shopping bag full of loot. But, as a Div. ...amuck individualism and nice-guy uninvolvement. The central character in Life During Wartime is, like almost all of Reddin's heroes, a genial but morally weightless young man. When he learns that other salespeople in his home-security firm are running a sideline in burglary -- for the loot and to generate additional sales -- he assumes it has nothing to do with him. Tragically late, he finds that it does. Reddin's point, no less forceful for being familiar, is that the unexamined life is not worth living...

Crooked savings-and-loan executives are not the only ones running off with loot these days. Old-fashioned stickup men are doing pretty well too. Bank robberies in the U.S., which declined during the first half of the 1980s, increased to 6,691 last year, a 23% rise from 1985. Unfortunately, crime often pays. Of $50 million taken from banks last year, only 20% has been recovered. The most common technique is the tried-and-true "note job," in which a robber simply hands a threatening note to the teller...
