...this stag banquet, the pickings -- or leavings -- for women were slim. They got to play wives and invalids, to judge from this year's five Oscar nominees for Best Actress. Oh, yes, Mary McDonnell in Passion Fish, Susan Sarandon in Lorenzo's Oil, Emma Thompson in Howards End, Catherine Deneuve in Indochine and Michelle Pfeiffer in Love Field all played strong, exemplary idealists. The actresses all received critical plaudits. But what is the sound of two hands clapping in a nearly empty theater, when other rooms in the multiplex are filled with crowds cheering for teenage turtles and the righteous...
Only a week earlier, in another Nature report, scientists revealed that they had found the gene that appears to cause X-linked adrenoleukodystroph y, or ALD, the rare degenerative disease depicted in the movie Lorenzo's Oil. Other researchers have just discovered that at least 23 different mutations in a single gene can lead to the development of type II (adult) diabetes...
...TALK USED TO BE CONFINED TO NEW-AGE BOOKSTORES, health-food shops and holistic magazines printed on whole-grain paper. But alternative medicine has now gone slickly mainstream: the subject of TV talk shows, best sellers and even an Oscar-nominated film, Lorenzo's Oil. As he arrives on the scene clad in makeshift armor, he discovers his fictitious Lady Dulcinea in the personage of the lovely peasant girl Kitri and vows to rescue her from peril. Kitri is indeed in trouble, for her father Lorenzo has tried to force her to marry the rich aristocratic fop Gamache over her sweet-heart, the young barber Basilio. Pursued by Lorenzo, Gamache and everyone else in the massive cast, Kitri and Basilio flee on a romantic adventure that takes them to a gypsy camp and then to a tavern...
Holmes' version does regain its gusto by the final scene, when Kitri and Basilio marry after successfully foiling Gamache and Lorenzo. The townspeople join in the extravagant celebration with waving fans and clattering castanets, but the highlight of the finale is the grande pas de deux. Sevillano enchants Armand with her coquetishness and bedazzles the audience with her technical skill. She skips delicately across the stage en pointe, slices through the air with split-second leaps and performs multiple pirouettes and fouette turns with luscious ease. Armand tosses his head more sexily than ever while leaping in furious circles about...
