...indulged in it, as well as of nearly every man; though Professor Garman assured us that in a practically air-tight jar it did not require to be changed more than once in twenty years. Reptiles will keep for an indefinite number of years in this way, though they lose their lustre and brilliancy. It is wonderful to see the minute differences, of seven seales more or less on the head, the number of vertebrae in the spinal column, the rake of a fin - which go to determine the difference between one specie and another. The fangs of snakes...
...inadequate to remedy evils here existing in reality far from their source. We are loth to believe that a want of gentlemanliness is so far encouraged at Harvard that the poorer students are compelled by the force of public opinion either to incur expenses beyond their means, or to lose caste among their fellows. It is necessary to the welfare of the university that young men of few resources can here gain an education, and any reasonable improvements, which shall prove efficient, toward such an end will, we are certain, be as readily acquiesced in by the wealthy students...

As has been several times expressed at the lectures, the idea of the courses is to give men a knowledge of who the writers are, what period and school they belong to, and what their general work has been. With this foundation laid...
...prevent it, still the proverbial uncertainty of base-ball makes every game doubtful. It is of the utmost importance that every one of the remaining games should be won, if the base-ball championship is to come to Harvard this year. It would be inexcusable, if the nine should lose the championship by dropping a game to one of the smaller colleges. The support of an enthusiastic audience is necessary at all games, and we hope that the fervor of the examination period will not prevent a goodly attendance on Holmes this afternoon...
