Alter is best at creating an atmosphere for the seemingly epiphanal moments in the book. The only difficulty is that these moments, when they finally occur, do not always fulfill the promise of their set-ups. For example, a fat man determines to lose a lot of weight, once and for all, and let his slothful habits fall by the wayside. The description of his decision and the absurd steps he takes are fine, but after he gets all cranked up, he simply and predictably caves in again. These trivial moments of neo-existential despair wear kind of thin. Alter...

Richmond, who has already won the Greater Boston and Massachusetts state titles this year, did not lose a set in her quest for the trophy. Losing only six games in the first three rounds, Richmond handily ousted entrants from U.N.H., Clark University, and UConn...

...draw parallels between her father's ideal and her own anachronistic choice to become a "saint" by sacrificing her youth to the care of a cripple. She questions the purity of her motives--makes her saintliness appear sinful and her vices sacremental. In retrospect she sees her decision to lose her virginity, for instance, as nothing but an attempt to shock her father into attention. Incestuous lovehate fro him made her sleep with his (only) disciple; perhaps she even intended to trigger her father's heart attack a few months later...

...contest is a patchwork of local conflicts. All 435 House seats are at stake, along with 35 Senate seats, 36 governorships and most state and local offices. Nobody expects any radical changes in party strengths: the Democrats will probably, retain their 61-vote margin in the Senate and lose only half a dozen of their 287 seats in the House, a bleak prospect for the Republicans in an off-year election. In much of the country, indeed, many key issues are purely regional ? motorboat restrictions in Minnesota's Boundary Waters canoe area, a city charter revision in Philadelphia...

...gargantuan stomach as lovingly as a child might fondle a stuffed Teddy bear. He raises his bushy eyebrows so high that one expects them to graze the ceiling. He turns the mere act of getting up from lunch into a dainty comic ballet. Ordered by his doctor to lose weight-half his weight-Morley adamantly refuses. "I have eaten my way to the top," he announces in his most imperious manner. "I am a work of art created by the finest chefs in Europe." Robert Morley is indeed a work of art. How nice to find him back...
