...gusto or the delicious abandon of his other covers, and the minimal production on the album doesn't help matters: the horns never are quite brassy enough, and Ferry's voice sounds muted at points. Instead of being languidly wistful, as one presumes he intended, "Falling in Love Again" and "Where or When" is merely sluggish. Perhaps we've heard these standards so often it's hard to be excited by these decidedly ordinary interpretations. Still, Ferry's voice remains rich and true; on that you can rely...

...aching and wistful and runs a private circuit all day between the head and the heart. The title track is the one that arrests you, and convinces you that you want to be inside Lee's head, even if you spend your time in there melancholic over lost love. The other eight tracks are lovely too, especially "quand j'aime," and the atmospheric "l'esquissse de l'esprit." Lee fronts her simple synthesizer and accordion with an undressed voice that quivers as it delivers; and then digitally deconstructs it through brother Cleve's best technology. She is finally quiet, simple...

...futuristic pulse of his last few albums to a screeching halt, pushing back with retro riffs and a painful amount of awkward nostalgia. The continued use of synthesizers in such a mix seems like contrived "coolness." The lack of interest or elegance apparent in song after song of faded love and introspection reduces Bowie's renowned musical and lyrical ferocity to tired (and tiresome) whining. Every track has its moments, but such nuances in a banal batch of tunes only remind the listener of better Bowie. "If I'm Dreaming My Life" and "The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell...

...your eyes. But in true glam style, he enunciates well and the accompaniment never overpowers his voice, so you can enjoy his entertainingly cynical lyrics with a libertarian slant later in the album. The guy clearly disdains the government; his boyish wails amid spoken commentary in "My Own God," "Love Is a Muscle" and "Lie of the Land" will elicit either sympathy or smirks, depending on your circle. Heck, how else should you react to words like "kill all the stupid people" or "underarm deodorant spray?" The tonal effects are occasionally weird, but most have been done, like the pseudo...

...miniscule square footage of the service area does not stifle the diner with its smallness but embraces him with its grandma's kitchen-like intimacy, achieved through glowing white walls muted with warm lights and dotted with cabinets grandma would love. The service area also avoids the typically antiseptic flavor of the serving area by refraining serving food on warmed platters that students can gather around like a family sharing in a buffet-style dinner...
