...this very smart movie, the woman is the lovelorn psycho, the man the not-quite-innocent victim. She (Glenn Close) is an editor; he (Michael Douglas) is a lawyer with a wife (the lovely Anne Archer), a child and a career to lose if his two-night stand is discovered. That the two principals are ostensibly mature professionals, not adolescent airheads, gives the film some of its fatal attractiveness. So do James Dearden's plausible, nicely observant script, Adrian Lyne's elegantly unforced direction, and Close's beautifully calibrated descent into lunacy. ...might have expected them to play it safe by including a number of drippy adolescent ballads. But even "Someone to Love Me for Me," the album's only ballad, is slightly adventurous for its genre. It's "All Cried Out" done as a church spiritual, with the lovelorn sentiment of last year replaced by a new moral self-confidence and self-righteousness. When times are good, the wilderness is shown being minced into salable acreage. Above it all, the sky rings its changes, slate blue in one picture, cornflower in the next, baby's-bottom pink in another. It is the last unspoiled stretch...
Birds do it, bees do it, but every year tens of thousands of British toads get squashed trying to do it. During migration from their winter woodland homes to springtime breeding ponds, the lovelorn toads frequently croak while crossing the country's roads. Shocked at this tragedy, Britain's Fauna and Flora Preservation Society has opened the country's first toad tunnel in Buckinghamshire. After a week of operation, officials were optimistic that the underpass would do the trick...
