WINGS OF DESIRE An angel, whose job it is to listen to the cries of human misery, falls to earth and falls in love. This astringent romantic fairy tale, from director Wim Wenders and novelist Peter Handke, imagines a West Berlin languishing in heartache and itching for spiritual redemption. It's funny...
Between the maze of subplots, Durand allows a sex scene or two, but his real love story is filial. As Daddy nears the end game, the book presents its sole ambiguity as father and son compete for the title role. Is the innocent American fit for parentage? Or has the little French garcon acquired a more mature knowledge of human treachery and altruism? Debating the question, Europeans have driven Thomas' adventure to the top of their best-seller lists. It is likely to have a commensurate success in the U.S., where some people fondly remember Father Knows Best...
...hard to imagine more odious citizens than some of those portrayed in Blind Faith. The villain of Fatal Vision had a perverse stature and a demonic intelligence that are totally lacking in McGinniss's Robert Marshall. His fabrications and the entreaties recorded on love cassettes to his mistress suggest a ludicrous absence of self-awareness. Marshall's low animal cunning hits bottom when he exploits his sons' conflict between filial loyalty and the truth about their mother's death. McGinniss makes the Marshall boys' loss of innocence the emotional center of an otherwise lurid and coldhearted book...

A psychiatrist who has examined Karen chides the senior Carpenters for making her feel inadequate and hiding their love. Mom bristles, but in the last scene finally utters the magic words "I love you." In the final shot Karen is seen walking toward the camera, beaming. Message No. 3: for connoisseurs of docudramas that turn depressing stories into upbeat affirmations, we've only just begun...
