...watching this family fight their way through this." Not as much fun, unfortunately, as it would be if the actors and plot twists did not look so much like mass-produced goods. One exception: Andrea Marcovicci, as a bitchy Berrenger wife, has an offbeat beauty and a mocking, low-key style that is a flavorful slice of rye in the white-bread surroundings...
Interesting stuff, but not the stuff of live drama. The conversations and confrontations are too low-key to acquire any dramatic tension, and not banal enough to reach a Pinteresque plateau of menace Chunks of the play are dedicated to give-and-takes between the various permutations of Stewart. Barbara and Bob debating the necessity, the ability, the desirability, and the morality of helping the Mr. Stewarts of this world. ...Blaize's triumph, he was never considered a sure winner. Indeed, only two months before the balloting, the dominant political mood in Grenada appeared to be apathy, especially among political moderates. Kristine's insistence that Jean "look her in the eye" and assure her he is still loyal is unquestionably one of the most powerful moments in the production...
Lugar, buttoned-down and a bit bland, is a capable organization man who may be the second choice of Senate Republicans. If Dole might be too assertive as majority leader, the low-key Lugar could be too deferential. Elected to the Senate in 1976, he is a relative newcomer. It seems apropos that Stevens, a 14-year veteran, is majority whip: his opinions tend to be plain and angrily expressed. "I've got a temper," he confesses, "and I know how to use it!" The New Right would pick McClure, a Senator since 1973, who shares their ultraconservatism...
