Can Cronkite's replacement, Dan Rather, with that four-square forthrightness of his, and his adrenalized ambition, keep the loyalty of those accustomed to Cronkite's businesslike, low-key delivery? Or will NBC's John Chancellor, another in the trusty Cronkite mold, steal away some of CBS's audience? Will ABC news, which tried to de-emphasize the anchorman and gambled on hi-tech flashiness instead, be able to lift itself out of third place...

...Sondheim has succeeded by overstepping the bounds of creative humility. Side by Side in and of itself works by taking the opposite approach. The show is professional but low-key, and unpompous narrator Patrick Harris tells anecdotes from the lyricist's life (memorable things Sondheim said, stories from his youth, the tale of his early humiliation by master songwriter Oscar Hammerstein) and then carries over the casual tone into his introductions of the next few songs...

In past years recruiting has been fairly low-key Jue to Harvard's stringent academic requirements and the relatively relaxed competition or women's sports in the Ivy League. But now that the quality of swimming is rising and times are dropping. Harvard will have to woo prospects more aggressery. And even that may not be enough--Harvard's high academic standards may be part of the problem...
