Dropped from high altitudes-rather than on the low-level runs that were necessary to ensure accuracy for unguided "dumb" bombs-the new armaments have made the war far less perilous for American pilots. They also have given flyers the assurance that they can eliminate military targets without the fear that their bombs may fall wide of the mark...

...exist, someone would have invented him. It is rather that on this superficial level one could not hope to understand the dynamics of Chinese society, and would have to be reduced to incomprehensible mummery about the mystical and irrational Oriental mind. On this level of analysis the objective conditions of contemporary Chinese society will remain elusive, as will the troubling question which I courageously raised with the Chinese officials about the prospects for socialism generally, given the low-level of productive forces as still exist today in China. It must be admitted, though, that on this matter the Chinese have...

Plucky Army. U.S. commanders need no convincing. Airpower is now considered to have been proved not only effective but essential in military terms, and it continues to have a devastating impact on civilian life in Indochina. Because of new techniques, including low-level "saturation" attacks, the effectiveness of airpower in stopping the flow of supplies down the Ho Chi Minh Trail has risen from a dismal 15% to a remarkable 85% over the past two years. Maybe so, but scientists are now seriously concerned about the long-term effects of such low-level radiation on individuals living and working in buildings in which tailings were used. Of about 5,000 such structures in the Grand Junction area between 1,500 and 2,000 have been found to contain radon gas. This gas is so penetrating that it can seep through foundations and into basements and other closed spaces. Even more ominous is the fact that radon gas breaks down into "radon daughters," highly radioactive substances that physicians believe cause genetic defects and cancer...

Still, many Poles are dissatisfied with the pace of Gierek's progress. While he has replaced many of the old bureaucrats in the upper echelon, one official noted, "Gierek will have more trouble with the corporals than the captains." The middle-and low-level party bureaucrats, who most often deal with the public, remain in office, as unhelpful and obdurate as ever. Polish newspapers daily receive letters from readers who complain that at the lower level, everything is as it was before...
